Kasthuri joined the 2016 preschool class of Shanti Bhavan at age 3 and half. Her mother was not legally married when she had Kasthuri. The father refused to support the child since it was not legally his. He abandoned the mother and Kasthuri leaving the mother to support herself and her child alone with no job. Her mother could not cope and wanted to get rid of her illegitimate child, so she left Kasthuri at the doorstep of an orphanage. Kasthuri was abandoned, left unwanted by both of her biological parents. The orphanage found her the next morning and decided they could take her in.
Shanti Bhavan is a charity located near Bangalore in India. Their mission is to take in disadvantaged children and provide world class education, shelter and food for them. When children grow up in a poor environment, it's hard for them to get a proper education and as a result, they remain in a cycle of poverty. Shanti Bhavan breaks this cycle by taking in children at the age of 4 and providing a comfortable and safe environment for them to grow up in. They operate a beautiful boarding school-like campus and provide a holistic and high quality focused education which allows the children to get into great colleges and secure good jobs. The organization covers all expenses for the children till they graduate from college.
Over the last 20 years, Shanti Bhavan has had tremendous success and has shown that its model works. The school has been the subject of many articles and documentaries. Their children have graduated from great Indian universities and have successfully secured jobs at great multinational companies such as Goldman Sachs, Mercedes Benz, Ernst & Young, JP Morgan and others. In recent years, some children have been offered scholarships to study abroad in places like Japan.
